Guide to Adding Textures - 2
I regularly use old walls as background textures. I never use brick walls as the bricks add a uniform pattern, which I find too obvious. It’s better to use really old walls that have been plastered or covered with some sort of rendering - these have a more haphazard look and also tell their own story of repair and transformation over the years.
I have a growing collection of nearly a thousand old walls and this one was shot in Jarnac, near Studio Lavalette. Jarnac down the road from Cognac and is home to Courvoisier, the brandy distillery. Round the back of the smart front of the main Courvoisier building are walls, as above, that have a fungus growing on them that literally smell of brandy – the fungus is seen here as the small black flecks that have smudged and run in the rain.
